Mike Arruda’s practice focuses on the acquisition, operation, and divestiture of oil and gas interests on behalf of clients in Asia. He represents oil and gas companies that are resident in Asia making acquisitions abroad as well as oil and gas companies based outside of Asia that are seeking to acquire companies or assets in Asia. Collectively, the clients he represents are involved in the full spectrum of oil and gas activities, from exploration and development through midstream processing and transportation activities to downstream refining and sales.

With more than 30 years of legal practice, Mike’s experience encompasses almost every aspect of oil and gas activity. He assists clients with oil and gas industry transactions, including competitive tenders and auctions, data acquisitions, joint studies, joint ventures, joint operations, farm-ins and farm-outs, unitizations, pipeline rights-of-way, crude oil sales, gas sales, gas balancing and storage, oil and gas processing, facility construction and sharing, and various other transactional matters relating to the acquisition, operation, and disposition of oil and gas interests.

Mike has represented clients in energy acquisitions and related transactions around the world, including China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Pakistan, Thailand, Libya, Mauritania, Tunisia, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Canada, the United States, Mexico, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

Prior to going into private practice, Mike worked as in-house counsel with a major international oil and gas company.

Our Energy Practice delivers the combined legal experience of a multi-disciplinary team of lawyers together with an in-depth understanding of the commercial and technical aspects of the energy industry to bring transactions, regulatory proceedings, and disputes to successful completion.

Our lawyers understand both the traditional principles and evolving trends that apply to established and emerging energy industry participants, which allows us to help our clients stay in front of (rather than just reacting to) the changes, small and large, that face the industry.

We advise the full spectrum of energy-related clients — governments and national energy companies; electric and gas independents and utilities; oil, gas, and mineral producers; pipeline, processing and distribution companies; electric transmission companies; developers and owners of wind power and other renewable energy sources; BTU conversion developers; services, construction, engineering, and environmental firms; companies trading electricity, natural gas, financial instruments, and emissions; and financial institutions providing capital and related services to these industries.

In 1986, Jones Day established its Hong Kong Office to offer on-the-ground support in Asia for the Firm’s international client base. In 1996, the office became the first branch office of a U.S. law firm to practice Hong Kong law. Today, our team of approximately 40 transactional and litigation lawyers offers one of the most comprehensive arrays of services among U.S. law firms in Hong Kong. Our lawyers received their legal training in a variety of jurisdictions in addition to Hong Kong, including the United States, United Kingdom, Mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore and, in addition to English, collectively speak Mandarin and various local dialects such as Cantonese, Shanghainese, and Taiwanese, as well as French, German, Spanish, Korean, Hindi, and Kannada.

Working with the Firm’s five other Asian offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Taipei, and Tokyo, the Hong Kong Office provides a comprehensive range of legal services to serve the Firm’s international and local clients. The office has extensive capabilities in mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, dispute resolution, intellectual property, real estate, and energy and routinely handles cross-border transactions involving Hong Kong, U.S., and English law. Jones Day’s One Firm Worldwide approach affords our clients seamless access to the Firm’s substantial legal resources in our fully-integrated network of more than 2,400 lawyers worldwide.

The Hong Kong Office has one of the largest and most active cross-border practices in the region and most of our practices have received high rankings in the Chambers Asia and Asia Pacific Legal 500 guides in recent years. Our lawyers and staff also have contributed generously of their time and talents to help improve the quality of life in the local community. For example, the office provides employment law advice for the Hong Kong Student Aid Society, which offers foster care, residential facilities, and educational support to children and young people, and helped establish Hong Kong’s first Mars exploration team and assisted the team in registering a U.S. patent and seeking financial support from the European Space Agency.

Michael Arruda, head of the practice, divides his time between the Hong Kong and Singapore offices. He is highly experienced in all areas of oil and gas work.
