Manfred Ungemach is partner in our Energy & Utilities Sector Group based in Düsseldorf.

He has focused on the energy industry since 1993 and is consistently recognised by the leading directories among the leading German energy lawyers for his in-depth knowledge of the energy sector, in particular downstream electricity and natural gas. Manfred is praised for his ability to combine legal expertise with great awareness and understanding of the commercial, technical and strategic aspects of the energy industry.

He focuses on the European and German regulation of energy markets and system operators, energy supply and service agreements and other commercial contracts, energy trading and energy antitrust and competition.

While most of his work is non-contentious, he has represented clients in litigation, arbitration and regulatory proceedings. Manfred also advises clients in relation to energy projects, particularly with regard to power plants, gas pipelines and storage systems. In addition, he has been involved in numerous mergers and acquisitions in the energy sector.

His clients include significant national and international companies within the electricity and gas sector; investors in the energy industry and power plants; and major energy consumers.
Manfred is a frequent speaker at national and international energy conferences and regularly publishes in legal and industry journals.

He holds an LLM degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Our Energy and Utilities team has been designed to meet the changing needs of the sector. Our view is that, as the world moves towards decarbonised economies coupled with an increased need for provision of essential utilities, the way in which projects are structured and delivered will evolve with the inclusion of complex new technologies.

Our International Energy & Utilities Sector Group acts for a large number of companies, funds, financial institutions and governments, involved in the energy sector. Our lawyers cover all aspects of renewable energy, electricity generation, energy trading, electricity transmission and gas transportation, electricity and gas distribution and supply, water and sewerage and climate change as well as upstream oil and gas.

Our practice is driven by a genuine understanding of key business technology and processes, and is particularly strong in energy regulation, major projects, corporate finance, emissions trading, environmental and dispute resolution.

Since 1898 we have led the way in protecting the ideas that have made some of the world’s greatest companies successful.

This rich history has given us an unparalleled insight into our client’s industries and, in 1998, we became one of the first law firms to organise itself around key sectors, enabling us to share our deep industry knowledge more effectively across the firm.

Today, the depth of experience in each sector, and the fact so many of our 1,000 lawyers and legal practitioners around the world have worked in-house or have relevant degrees that complement their legal qualifications, means that our clients find they are working with a legal team that already understands the challenges they face.

Our passion for the Aviation, Aerospace, Communications, Electronics, Energy & Utilities, Food & Beverage, Financial Services, IT, Life Sciences, Media and Sport sectors means that we are continuing to attract the brightest and best lawyers in these industries to work with us. They join us because the fact that our clients are continually innovating means we often work at the cutting-edge of the law to establish how legal frameworks are implemented in new situations.

Last year our deep industry knowledge helped us gain 15 awards and accolades for the quality of legal service we provide, on top of rankings across 34 disciplines in the major legal directories.

Manfred Ungemach’s recent move to Bird & Bird was a point of comment for many interviewees this year. Clients value his broad knowledge of the energy industry and specific expertise in legal questions relating to the gas sector.
