Sumanto is chair of the Projects Practice at JSA. He focuses on the Energy sector.

Sumanto primarily works on Electricity, Oil & Gas and Renewable Energy Project development and Project Financings. In addition, he also advises on other infrastructure projects such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

With regard to Power Projects, Sumanto has advised on the whole gamut of Project Development issues, including, Project tenders, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Fuel Supply Agreements (both Coal & Gas), Engineering & Procurement contract (EPC) (including split EPC contracts); Operations & Maintenance Agreements (O&M), and land related issues (including Forest Land issues)
With regard to Renewable Energy, he has advised on establishment of multiple Wind Power, Hydro, Bio-mass and Solar Projects in India.
He also advises on diverse Energy projects, such as LNG projects (including LNG sale & purchase agreements) upstream developments (including on Production sharing Contracts and Joint Operating Agreements), and product or gas off take agreements.

Sumanto has advised multiple International Energy (Electricity, Oil & Gas and Renewable Energy) companies on their Indian projects. He has advised many large Indian Oil & Gas companies with regard to their domestic as well as international investments.

Sumanto has various publications in Energy journals and has recently submitted a chapter on Oil & Gas Laws in a book to be published by the Oxford University Press.

JSA represents a wide range of entities in the sector, including (i) State owned utilities,(ii) Private utilities,(iii) Contractors and Off-takers, (iv) Central & State Governments, (v) Lenders (both Indian & foreign commercial banks) & development agencies, (vi) State Electricity Regulatory Commissions; (vii) Oil and Gas companies and oil field service providers.

JSA has advised Power Developers on Power Projects – both conventional (thermal and hydro) and renewables (solar, wind, biomass), with project size ranging from micro (5MW) to Ultra Mega (+4000 MW) – transmission and distribution entities. We have advised major Oil and Gas companies on upstream (exploration and production including production sharing contracts, Joint Operating Agreements) and downstream (trading, transportation, and refining) projects.

Our attorneys are engaged in (i) Advising project developers, investors, and suppliers & contractors in the energy sector on diverse commercial / transactional issues and all aspects of licens¬ing, market structures, competition, performance stan¬dards & tariffs; (ii) Providing policy advice to governmental & regulatory authorities on issues like development of legal, regula¬tory & policy frameworks and promotion of Public – Private Partnership; (iii) Providing advice on restructuring of existing legal and regulatory frameworks; (iv) Advising Financial Institutions & borrowers in relation to Project Financing transactions; (v) Advising on acquisitions and divestments; (vi) Advising on private placement of equity and Initial public offerings; (vii) Advising on sustainable development issues like clean development mechanism & environmental compliances; (viii) Handling resolution of disputes in various fora, including regulatory commissions and courts and alternate dispute resolution processes.
